I read this the other day in a Yahoo! news item and meant to post it on the blog. Then, with the goings on with our son and ITT, it got put on the back burner for a bit.
However, it also coincidentally reinforces that very post (accessed above) so it seems the gods have a hand once in a while on what we write
According to the news item, there are 10 top categories paying over $40,000 a year that need little to no time spent in a classroom environment. These great fields do, of course, require training – but a solid 2 year college or solid certification program are enough to put either yourself or your son and/or daughter into great positions within the work force. Less money out of everyone’s pocket and going into theirs (or yours).
These fields include the following (and I’ve put the money in, too, but you really should read the article referenced below for full details):
o Computers – from network installers to network administrators to computer systems administrators (Salary: $49,801)
o Police Officers (Salary $47,485)
o Court Reporters (Salary $47,275) – read why!
o Clinical Laboratory Technologists ($47,081)
o HVAC Installers (Salary $44,814) – adding the extra note here that I know, first hand that typically a technical trainee new to the field will most likely start out around $10/hour depending on the area of the country. The issue? Some certification programs do not train on the latest equipment and companies “expect” a certain amount of “oops!” mistakes – by paying less they cover the cost of equipment replacement until the novice becomes more experienced. Just keep that in mind.
o Solar Energy Systems Installers ($44,460) – which leads me to make the statement that this country (the U.S. is seriously lacking in that field and you need to watch “Future Solar Islands” over at the Forcedgreen blog to see what the Swiss have up their sleeve!)
o Computer Numerical Controllers (Salary $44,629)
o Correctional Officers (Salary $42,795)
o Fire Alarm and Security Installers ($41,417)
o Aircraft Mechanics ($39,584) – this one seems too low to me, but perhaps there is a work-your-way-up-the-pay-scale quickly to it. I’d like the folks keeping the planes in the sky paid more (it’s like teachers, underpaid by my way of thinking)
I’ll leave you with just a small quote from the article reference below (again go read it for full details):
Education costs for most of these careers are modest — you might even pay nothing at all.
So if your field has stalled out or your child/adult needs direction choosing a path for the interim or always future, these fields should be placed on that “what if I become” list and investigated.
I’d also include on that list (my personal opinion):
o Teachers
o Nurses

Totally agree with you but I’d like to add two more to your list that also require training, but you can
also do it as on the job training. And we need these so badly, Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians. There just aren’t enough out there.
I come from a family of volunteer firefighters and they are very scarce at least.
Those are the types of positions that will earn anyone good money for a long long time.
I believe too often there is too much emphasis on University degrees as being the only way to earn a decent living. All skills are needed to make the world go round. In Canada some of our most needed workers are under paid. Especially, those like paramedics who have been on strike for months.
Sincerely,
Terry
It’s very interesting to see this, and obviously I can’t comment about careers in your country. In the UK, though, you need a degree for teaching. Most nurses have degrees too, but there are ways to avoid going through university.

Hey Theresa!
Thanks for passing these along.
Fortunately, I am not in the market myself, but I’m passing this piece on to my daughter who’s currently looking.
Good work!

That is a good list. The wages vary according to location too.
It’s interesting that several of the jobs listed are quite dangerous, yet the take home pay is under $500 a week.
Another timely and terrific post…Thanks!
I didn’t realize police officers made that much. They definitely deserve it, though. I agree that teachers and nurses should be on that list as well. They don’t get enough credit for what they do.
