According to studies run by the folks over at Getresponse (an autoresponder I use myself), sending personalized emails has its up side and its down side.
They analyzed over 53,000 of their own messages sent out to their massive list over a three month time period (September to December 2009). Evidence appeared to suggest – at first glance – that personalizing the subject line was the way to go.
However, upon further inspection (really digging down into their tracking) they discovered what most internet marketers would call “alarming” information.
While it’s true that seeing your name in an email message most likely catches your attention, I’d recommend reading their blog post: Do Personalized Subject Lines Improve Campaign Results?
Don’t jump to conclusions without reading what they have to say first. But don’t be pig-headed and not read thinking you already know the answer.
There’s a lot more information in that post. Smart marketers arm themselves with as much information as possible!
All the best,
Theresa
P.S. Don’t forget that over-paying for information is not the brightest move on your part. I have a wealth of internet marketing knowledge over at the main web site. And you’ll never pay more than $20 (tops). In fact, 99% is offered for well under $10.
This is the SAME information, if not BETTER, than what you’re paying $50 and up ($100s?) for – plus there’s always a Dimesale Weekend special each week. For pennies on the dollar.
P.S.S. BTW, I’m going to take a lot of the advice myself offered in that post and see what happens. Even after 10+ years online, never assume you know it all

[...] THIS post is about is to refer you over to one I just made on the My Wizard Ads blog. It is very pertinent for all internet marketers, yet redoing it here would be… well redundant. And, I just finished that post up and if I say [...]
Ah ha … a catch 22, Theresa!
I still like to personalize the subject line whenever possible. E-mail filters are unpredicatable. From experience, I see many e-mails come in that should be sent to junk and many that end up in junk that shouldn’t be.
Sincerely,
Terry

Hi Theresa!
Thanks for the good information once again. Whenever I come here I’m a student.
@ Theresa G – yeah it’s an either or thing for me, too. I think the most important part is that the subject line is pertinent but just a bit on the wacky side – enough to stand out without the reader wanting to cart you off in the white van LOL!
@ Brad – thank you! Also the heads up on the popin once a day. You know for me it is dead on, so if others are seeing it strangely (the offer for FREE reports), please let me know!
Great information! I, too, learn when I come here which I love. I never want to stop so keep it up!

The title is the thing that gets people sucked in. I saw a thing on CNN that said Charlie Sheen’s wife was admitted to the hospital. Of course I had to click, given his history of spousal abuse. Come to find out she had some sort of stomach virus. I got sucked in enough to click!
That was quite interesting. You always have the best, up to the minute information! Thanks!
I’ve seen that work with marketers when I get emails from them. They think of the best subject lines.

Personally, I find feigned personalising of what is obviosuly a mass mailing kind of annoying : /
I also find mass mailing very annoying and I’m not sure if there are any numbers to prove if it really works, especially for the $ that you have to pay for it. Great post and you always seem to teach us something. thanks jj

I use various aliases online, so when I see a “personalised” email, I immediately mark it spam.
Some personalization is a red flag for spam – if it’s not how people typically address me, then I’m not getting an email from a real person.
