Some personalization is a red flag for spam – if it’s not how people typically address me, then I’m not getting an email from a real person.

I use various aliases online, so when I see a “personalised” email, I immediately mark it spam.

I also find mass mailing very annoying and I’m not sure if there are any numbers to prove if it really works, especially for the $ that you have to pay for it. Great post and you always seem to teach us something. thanks jj

The title is the thing that gets people sucked in. I saw a thing on CNN that said Charlie Sheen’s wife was admitted to the hospital. Of course I had to click, given his history of spousal abuse. Come to find out she had some sort of stomach virus. I got sucked in enough to click!

@ Theresa G – yeah it’s an either or thing for me, too. I think the most important part is that the subject line is pertinent but just a bit on the wacky side – enough to stand out without the reader wanting to cart you off in the white van LOL!

Ah ha … a catch 22, Theresa!

I still like to personalize the subject line whenever possible. E-mail filters are unpredicatable. From experience, I see many e-mails come in that should be sent to junk and many that end up in junk that shouldn’t be.
